When we are left with no teeth- The edentulous state of life!!!

One or the other day we all might come across this inevitable state of mouth in our lives. May be some of us have already crossed the above said stage with a ‘nice’, ‘poor’ or ‘somehow managable’ experience. It could be ‘ ‘great’ or ‘worst’ for some.

Patients always have lot of fear, anxiety and even expectations when they visit a dentist especially if they are visiting for purpose of getting there dentures fabricated.

Through this article I would discuss some information which a patient needs to know before getting a denture and also what they should actually expect from a dentist.

                “Artificial only mimicks natural”

Lets get into some logistics. As literature tells us that if we take four meals a day, total chewing force on teeth is said to be approx. 9 minutes and it has been calculated that average force on teeth during chewing or swallowing is 17.5 mins/day. So, these forces are handled differently by natural teeth and artificial teeth i.e. dentures. It greatly depends on type of food one eats. It has also been recorded that chewing or the biting force appears to be 5-6 times less with complete dentures in comparison to natural teeth.

Dentures gets there basic support from their underlying bone. Success of dentures greatly depends on the skills of the dentist, the material used and most importantly the synchronization of minds of dentist and patient results in a happy denture patient.

In the end I want all dear denture patients to know that dentist can only replicate or simulate the natural, though it can really have different levels!!!
