The 'old normal' which was never too normal

Everybody is talking about ‘the new normal’ in this pandemic era. Recently my focus was dragged by something which is a very old normal but actually it has never been normal amongst dentists and the patients.

By this I mean home care of any treatment given by the dentist. If we purchase even a smallest thing from market which makes us look good for example clothes, eye glasses, watches or a pair of shoes we handle and use them with utmost care. So, why can’t we take good care of prosthesis given in our mouth by the dentist after so much effort and also for which you have spend money.

Coming back to my old love ‘dentures’- whenever a dentist is fabricating a denture they try to simulate extreme peculiarities which were present in the natural teeth of patients, at times they have been seen asking for old and happy photographs of patients in which their teeth are visible so that they can imitate it well. On the other hand patients are also very keen that their dentures should look natural so that people they meet should not be able to identify if they are natural or artificial. Patient and doctor both feels that dentures should remain glued in mouth.

But what will retain extremely good dentures in patients mouth??? Nobody is talking about it. I am coming across many patients from really good and extremely well backgrounds and they appear extremely malnourished. Whenever I have little long conversations with them they seems to have real difficulty in swallowing in between intervals of speaking, dry and chapped lips, dry mouth, redness at corner of mouth are very common.

And suddenly situation turns challenging for the dentist. Where will I give the dentures, for which this innocent old patient is sitting in this dental chair???? Ohhh, I was seeking for a healthy mouth, healthy tissues and some saliva for making a denture.

There could be hundred causes for unhealthy oral tissues and also there are thosands remedies to treat them. Down the line ‘happy and healthy lifestyle’ is the answer.

Happiness comes in a circle- what we give, we get the same. We as dentists, as family, as youth and also as patients should grow towards a happy and healthy living for one and all. Elderly’s are assest to us and we need to take good care.

“GOOD DENTURE STAYS IN A HEALTHY MOUTH, HEALTHY MOUTH STAYS IN HEATHY PERSON AND A HEALTHY PERSON STAYS IN HAPPY HOME”

I dont know patients understand the ‘happiness and satisfaction’ of the dentist when dentures given by us are a success and our patients turns happy, eat food of their choice, full of blessing for us, tells us stories of chit chatting with their friends with teeth in their mouth now or some of them might think it just as a monetary affair!!!!!
